I recently started running. Back then, it was the middle of autumn in Korea. All I needed to run outside was a shirt, shorts, and running shoes. I didn't think much about running clothes. After a few months, the outside temperature began to drop as winter approached. Only then did I feel the need for extra layers to keep me warm while running in the cold. The key to layering is to trap my body heat and avoid overheating while allowing for a full range of motion. Through trial and error, I developed my personal know-how to choose what I should wear. Now, I am ready to crush my outdoor runs all winter long.
In moderately cold conditions (around 0℃)
Light base layer
I prefer to wear a comfortable long-sleeve shirt with moisture-wicking fabric that stretches well.
Vest
While looking for another layer upon a light long-sleeve, I realized a vest is the perfect solution. It keeps my core warm but my arms free. An insulation vest is the most versatile among the items I have.
Zippered windproof jacket
A windproof jacket helps trap the body heat and can be vented by unzipping. I can adjust my temperature as needed. I prefer a jacket with a high neck.
Gloves
When running without gloves, my hands get cold easily, and I cannot focus on my pace. I bought lightweight windproof gloves, and they were satisfying.
Mid-weight running pants
I prefer slim-fit running pants without a fleece lining.
Additional running gear when it's freezing cold (around -10℃)
Mid-weight base layer
Instead of a light long-sleeve, I wear a slightly thicker moisture-wicking long-sleeve.
Beanie
After I realized that my head loses significant heat, I began wearing a beanie in the freezing cold weather. It keeps my ears and head warm.
Compression tights
When it is too cold, I wear thin short tights underneath mid-weight running pants
Neck warmer
I normally do not wear a neck warmer because a jacket with a high neck will do. Plus, a mask to prevent COVID-19 also keeps my face warm. When I need some extra warmth, I use a neck warmer.
