When it comes to driving my own car, I often find myself facing a dilemma. While there are undeniable benefits to having a car, deciding whether to drive or not is not always an easy choice. There are several factors to consider, such as travel times, road congestion, parking availability, and parking fees. These considerations often leave me torn between using public transportation and driving.
Living in a small city, I typically enjoy the convenience of driving locally. The roads are generally less congested, resulting in smoother and quicker journeys. Additionally, parking lots are readily available and reasonably priced, ensuring a hassle-free parking experience.
However, my experiences drastically change when I venture into Seoul, the bustling metropolitan area. The travel time to Seoul varies significantly depending on the time of day. During rush hours and on weekends, what should be a relatively short journey can easily double or even triple in duration. The frustration of being trapped in traffic, with nothing to do but stare at the never-ending line of cars, is truly agonizing. Even if I manage to reach Seoul early in the morning without encountering traffic, navigating through the downtown area and finding parking spaces can quickly turn into a nightmare. The lots are often overcrowded, and the fees are exorbitant compared to my city, amplifying the overall inconvenience. All these factors make me question whether driving is the best option.
Another crucial aspect to consider is the social component of my trips to Seoul. The primary reason for my visits is often to meet friends, go on dates, or attend social gatherings. In these instances, I may want to indulge in a drink or two. However, having my car becomes a sudden inconvenience as I cannot drive back home, and I must find an alternative such as hiring a replacement driver (known as "대리운전" in Korean). This further complicates the decision to drive, as I must weigh the need for alternative transportation options or rely on public transit, adding an extra layer of planning and potential restrictions to my outings.
In my quest for balance, I continuously evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of driving to Seoul. While having a car undoubtedly offers numerous benefits in my daily life, I strive to minimize the inconveniences associated with driving in the metropolitan area. This involves carefully considering the time spent in traffic, the availability and cost of parking, and the limitations on social activities. By taking these factors into account, I aim to make informed decisions each time I plan a trip to Seoul, ensuring that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
