A growing number of people around me started wearing smartwatches. Even those who did not use to wear a wristwatch now seem to be mesmerized by smartwatches. I agree that smartwatches have many great features. You can get notifications for your calendar and social media. The latest models enable you to take calls directly from the watch, monitor your heart rate, and even measure blood oxygen saturation levels.
Assuming that you want to enjoy all these features, the expected price for a smartwatch starts from about 0.4 million won (about 360 US dollars). Is it worth buying? For any of those tasks, I have a smartphone. I am also already bombarded by unnecessary notifications all day long: personal emails, work emails, spam texts, and spam calls. Why bother to strap on an additional smartphone to cause a real-time distraction?
Well then, don't I have a smartwatch? Yes, I have one. Contrary to my first impressions of smartwatches, I saw a need for one. After several runs, I craved a convenient device to track my runs. Free smartphone apps like Nike Run Club provide basic features for fitness tracking, but they require me to carry and pull out my smartphone to control the app. This little nuisance spoils the fun of my runs. For that reason, I bought an entry-level Garmin smartwatch, forerunner 45.
Forerunner 45 is a running-focused GPS smartwatch. I do not need any special features other than a GPS, a heart rate sensor, and a steps tracker. This model satisfies my needs at a reasonable price. (The price is less than half of Apple Watch's.) Now I do not need to carry my smartphone while running. My smartwatch shows real-time pace while running and record my run's details. A dedicated fitness app, Garmin Connect, tracks my fitness goals. Knowing my exact running speed and having a specific map of my last run without my smartphone enhanced my running experience. Plus, it has a long battery life, so I don’t have to charge it every day.
Did I change my attitude towards smartwatches? Well, I just became a fan of Garmin. I am still not in favor of buying an Apple Watch or Samsung Galaxy Watch. However, someday I might buy a new Garmin smartwatch with superior fitness-focused features.
