I used to be a regular gym-goer. I was a workout enthusiast and loved the endorphin rush after a set of exercises. When the gym was closed, I worked out in a park or ran along the stream. When it was raining, I worked out at home with a yoga mat and dumbbells. I always found a way to exercise anywhere, anytime.
However, I have not exercised for a long time for several reasons. As a result, I gained weight, and now I'm getting a potbelly. More than that, I have developed back pain. Perhaps my core muscles have weakened, and they cannot support my back properly any longer. That's why I restarted my workout routine after a long break. I've learned some insights along the way about how to make exercise a habit.
Start small
The habit of working out cannot be built in a day. Your mind and body need time to get accustomed to extra activities. Just keep yourself moving. Use stairs instead of an elevator, or take a 10-minute extra walk a day on your way home. After some time, you will be prepared for more strenuous activities.

Find the exercise that works for you
Going to the gym is not the only available option for working out. Choose any exercise that you can make a part of your life and stick to it. If you are stuck in your office all day long and want to go out, try running outdoors after work. If you like playing team sports with friends, make it regular, like once a week. If you prefer exercising alone indoors, turn your home into a gym. In my case, I enjoy running and walking along greenways, and I do a few extra workouts, such as squats, lunges, and push-ups in between running and walking.

Find your workout buddy
When you work out with someone, you don't get bored or feel fatigued easily. You feel more competitive and active, which enables you to burn more calories. When it is difficult to adjust your schedule to someone, YouTube videos or apps can be your workout buddy. Using the compete mode of a fitness tracker app, you can compare your records with your friends' and encourage each other to exercise more.

Log your workouts
Tracking workouts has never been easier than now with the help of smartphones and fitness wearables. The greatest advantage of logging is that you can tangibly see your workout results in detail, such as new heaviest lift, fastest speed, calorie burn, and longest workout. You can look back at how far you have come. Once you see your progress, it will keep you motivated and on track.
