Nowadays, we spend a whole bunch of time in front of our computers. Whether we are working, communicating with friends, writing a paper, or playing a game, the computer keyboard is an indispensable tool. However, people generally tend to neglect their keyboards. When people buy a new computer, a keyboard comes along. This keyboard is rarely replaced and likely to last long because most users don't care much about their keyboards even when they upgrade their computers. I was one of them. However, I felt the need for a new keyboard at some point, and now I have seven different computer keyboards.
The reason I first bought a new keyboard was hygiene. Back then, I was a trainee doctor, and I had a rotation schedule. I had to move to a different division every month and use a desk where another trainee doctor had worked the previous month. It meant that I had to use a shared computer. One day, I was confused while typing because the pressed enter key didn't spring up, leaving endless empty new lines on the screen. I removed the keycap to figure out the cause, only to see a disgusting mixture of hair, snack crumbs, and dirt, which must have been accumulating for years from random people. I ran to the closest store right away and bought an affordable Logitech keyboard. Since then, I've been using my personal keyboard at work. Also, I don't eat snacks directly over my keyboard.
The next keyboard that I bought was for my iPad. I used to work and study using my iPad whenever I had time to kill when I was downtown. The onscreen keyboard was inconvenient, and I thought a portable keyboard would increase my productivity. However, the first portable keyboard that I bought was a failure. The keyboard was light and foldable, and those were the features that were emphasized in the commercial. However, the keyboard was unstable during use because it often folded unexpectedly. I regretted buying it and bought another basic portable keyboard. The new portable keyboard didn't feel good to type on, but it was stable, at least.
During the first few years of working, I've overused my wrists and fingers. Eventually, wrist and finger pain was developed. Typing may not be considered strenuous activities, but it can surely damage the wrist and hand over time. My pain got better, but then it worsened. I heard from coworkers that it is easier to type on mechanical keyboards. The mechanical keyboards were more than three times as expensive as standard keyboards. I was skeptical about its worth, so I first bought a low-end cheap mechanical keyboard. It wasn't too effective, and it still stressed my fingers. Only after my wrist and finger pain worsened did I buy a decent mechanical keyboard. The new keyboard worked for me. It solved all my wrist and finger pain and delivered a much nicer typing experience. The keyboard felt better on the fingertips. It became a joy to sit down and just type for a while. I couldn't believe that it took me several years to figure out the solution. I ordered one more mechanical keyboard to use at home.
If I had bought a nice mechanical keyboard in the first place, I could have saved money. My wrist and finger pain might not have been developed. I highly recommend you to buy a decent mechanical keyboard if you spend most of your time typing. It is worth the price. Also, once wrist pain is developed, managing the symptom is difficult and annoying. Prevention is far more important.
