When I was a teenager, I often studied in bed. I remember a day when I was preparing for the first midterm exam in middle school. Late at night, I still had a lot to catch up on, but I felt lazy. I crawled into my bed with my textbook. I lay down on my stomach, holding my book. The comfort of the warm bed was so relaxing. Before long, I began to repeatedly read the same page because I was stuck in a cycle of dozing off and wakening up. I forgot everything I read in the last few minutes of study before I dozed off. When I finally woke fully, it was the next day morning. Ta-da! I was lost for words. As I slept all night in an awkward position, my shoulders and back hurt. Also, I fell behind on my study schedule. I should've studied at my desk or just had a good night's sleep and woken up early to continue my study schedule as planned.
After that shameful event, I wised up and completely broke my habit of studying in bed. The comfort of your bed will suck away your focus. Studying in bed puts you in a position to fail because our body is trained to associate bed with sleep.
Moreover, there's another good reason to be inactive in bed. When you study in bed, you can't easily make short notes or sticky notes. There's a lack of space to spread out your research papers and study material. Even when you have an incomplete understanding of a certain topic and need additional information to understand better, you're likely to give up on finding what you need. You don't want to explore it any further because you don't want to move if you're comfortable. That's how your bed tempts you to stop working and sleep. On the other hand, at a desk, you can better assemble and organize your thoughts as well as study materials. You will be more active and won't feel lazy or sleepy.
Did I benefit from this change? Yes, sure. My school gave us report cards with our scores written out of 100. My average score for twelve subjects went up by 3 points in the finals, and my test score has not fallen below that score since. I didn't change my study method in any other way. How simple it is! Just avoiding a bad study environment can easily boost your performance to learn and retain new information. I believe that this is one of the productive study strategies that enabled me to get into medical school and survive.
