Only a few years ago I could not possibly imagine myself driving. For one thing, I normally find it difficult to make an attempt at something new. Driving was an entirely new experience for me, and I didn't drive at first even though I received my driver's license. For another thing, my workplace was very close to my home and I was living in a city with solid public transportation. That's why I never really felt a need to drive.
However, after moving to a new workplace I felt it was necessary to drive. The estimated time to commute by bus took more than five times as long. With that in mind, I took the plunge and bought a new car.
It's been about three years since then and now I'm quite confident in driving. Besides, I found great advantages to having a car. First, it saves a lot of time on travel. Also, now I can go to a number of distant nice places that I wanted to go to before but couldn't due to the limits of public transport. I can also carry bulky or heavy things with the use of my car.
However, I also realized that owning a car is not as simple as I had expected. It costs quite a bit of money to maintain and repair a car. Car insurance is expensive as well. Another thing is I still haven't gotten used to seeing the growing number of scratches on my car. I need to worry about parking spaces for my car whenever I travel in reference to that. Last but not least, having a car robbed me of a substantial amount of physical movement, such as walking. I have to make more time to exercise so I can continue to burn calories.
Despite all those disadvantages, now I can't live without my car. This is because the great advantages I mentioned, plus others, outweigh the minor disadvantages.
**This writing is part of my learning process. When I choose a topic to write about, I google and read related articles to learn natural English expressions. I try to make an impromptu speech based on what I learned. Then write down the script. I review my writing and check grammar as far as I can. I have it revised by someone whose first language is English. Lastly, I read aloud the writing many times until I can memorize it.
